Current events have most of us stressed out and not sleeping well. Saunas are the perfect solution to improve your overall health and well-being. Here are just a few ways they can help you physically and mentally feel better:
Improved circulation reduces blood pressure
A sauna’s heat expands blood vessels and improves circulation. Upon entering, the sauna user’s heart rate and blood pressure increase in the heat. However, after the session, a user’s blood pressure and heart rate will then drop lower than before the session.
Pain relief and recovery
Maybe you’ve really pumped up your home workout routines or have been going on longer runs and walks, resulting in sore joints and achy muscles. Saunas relax and soothe muscles and joints while also speeding up the body’s natural healing process by increasing blood flow. Whether you have a physically demanding lifestyle, are an avid exerciser, or have a painful ailment, saunas are wonderful ways to find relief.
Flush toxins and cleanse skin
Deep sweating in a sauna can help detoxify your body by flushing toxins from your system. Sweating will also cleanse your skin by rinsing bacteria out of the epidermal layer and sweat ducts. This cleansing of your pores improves capillary circulation and skin elasticity, which gives your skin a softer, more youthful look.
Relieve stress
A sauna’s heat helps us relieve stress by relaxing, but also by regulating some of our body’s hormones. The heat helps us to reduce our cortisol (the hormone released when we are stressed, which can lead to immune system and sleep problems) and increases our seratonin (“happy” hormone) production.
Deeper sleep
Are you tired of tossing and turning all night and never getting a restful sleep? The combination of the endorphins released during a sauna and the rise and fall of your body’s temperature are keys to a deeper sleep experience.
Practice sauna safety
Always follow the proper safety precautions to ensure you receive the best results from your sauna sessions.
- Stay hydrated: Avoid alcohol before or after your sauna, and drink 2 to 4 glasses of water after each sauna session.
- Stick to a time limit: 15-20 minutes is the the optimum amount of time to spend in the sauna at a time—don’t overdo it!
- Cool down: Take it easy and cool down gradually after your session. Immediately jumping into cold water can cause circulatory stress and should be avoided.
